A local business I know [suffers][proc] from this greatly.

but it’s often the case that owner-executives won’t do that because they believe they need to be involved in “essential” business processes. Never mind that they could always follow-up to customer care requests after they’ve been solved rather than being a bottleneck to the solution.

It’s so bad that their son is leaving the company, to work in the same field for someone else just because the bottle neck with his parents is so bad. In fact there are 3 staff members leaving in the next few months which constitutes all of the core staff. You’d think this is a wake up call for the business, but it’s not. They will continue to let it die a slow death and complain that they can’t retire while not letting anyone else do anything.

This is something I fear happening in my own business. Currently it’s a business of 1 but I’d like to hire a few people and I don’t want to watch them. More than that I want to make sure that when I’m retiring I’ve got people around that can make decisions to keep the business running. The only way that is going to happen is if I don’t get in the way ion the first place.

If you own a business, where do you get in the way of things getting done?
