From ajay:

How do we bring reading back?

I ask myself this question as well but have a hard time finding an answer because I love to read. Heck I have a whole podcast dedicated to helping you find books that are going to matter to you.

Maybe it starts with kids? I mean my oldest reads and reads and reads as much as possible. While she started slower, my middle child (4) loves to have you sit on the couch and read to her.

How many parents “don’t have the time” to do that now? Is it really that you don’t have the time, or that it’s too bothersome for you? I’m willing to bet that it’s the latter. You’re too busy doing other crap like looking at your phone so reading feels like a distraction from what you would rather be doing.

Next, how do we get adults reading? Maybe we abandon social media, which really is what you’re doing on your phone most of the time anyway, in favour of hanging out with the people around us or…reading on our own.

It’s going to be a tough transition, but I don’t buy the argument that reading is just dying. Maybe for a large portion of the population it’s going away, but will that portion be shaping the discussions we have? Will they be contributing in any meaningful way1?

Any thoughts on how we get more people reading and digging deep on content?

  1. No I don’t consider commentary on reality TV good contribution. Pontificating on crap is still putting out more crap. Don’t be a crap spewed.
