Review

This is a story of one of the biggest telecom companies in Canada, Rogers Communications, and the family behind it. While the subtitle leads you to believe that we're going to hear about the sordid drama between family members during a merger with Shaw Communications and a CEO ousting, that's a very small part of the book. Posadzki spends much more time talking about Ted Rogers and how he founded the company.

My verdict, Ted's son Edward wants to run a fiefdom of people that agree with him. He did push his other family members out of positions of power to get this, while trying to maintain his innocence by saying he was acting in the companies best interests.

I'm also annoyed again at a company that can see an 8% jump in revenue with a 35% jump in profits after a massive outage that took down lots of infrastructure in Canada. I suppose we're expected to live with these types of companies being the norm though as most of the big companies in Canada have similar stories, single digit increases in revenue and double digit increases in profits while Canadians struggle to get by.

If you're interested in some telecom drama in Canada, this was a good read.

Notes

- Edward seems to just not like anyone but his dad running the company. Sources close to the company speculate just that. pg 189

- yeah Edward just wants Independent board members that will do what he wants. He doesn’t want independence and push back, he wants control. Pg 224

- I was unsure why the [[Donald Trump]] photo and Mar A Lago visit was discussed earlier, it felt like gossip but then Martha goes off Tweeting about disclosing the “receipts” of shady dealings with Trump and it starts to make sense. Pg 236
- her Tweets are of a wronged petty person though. Part of gotcha social media and just seem childish

- Shortly after the 2022 outage Rogers financials showed an 8% growth in revenue but a 35% jump in profit. Pg 291
- [[Enshittification - Cory Doctorow]] would say this is due to lack of competition which allows them to charge more than they should be able to for services that cost them nothing
