Just because you can learn something online, doesn't mean that you use the internet for learning. Most people aren't using the vast amount of knowledge at their fingertips to lead to better outcomes in their lives.
Most nights you sit down on the couch and engage in meaningless content for hours. You look up and realize that you're up later than you wanted and that the time you spent, was spent poorly. But you repeat the cycle the next day.
I'm not against watching stuff on YouTube (though I'm pretty much always against time spent on Facebook), but only if that's what you're intending to do with your time. It doesn't even have to be "educational" content, sometimes a set of feel-good videos about how awesome people are is just what the doctor ordered.
But the doctor didn't order it every night. The doctor didn't prescribe staying up late and missing out on sleep.
One rule I follow a few times a week1 is to put my devices on the kitchen counter plugged in by 8 pm. The only way I can use them is if they're plugged in, which makes their use difficult.
No this doesn't solve all my problems, but it at least makes me think about what I'm going to use my devices for.
- Yes I also fail and waste my time at night too. ↩
