Object Permanence and Link Rot
Cory wrote an excellent piece on spelunking through your old thoughts and the implication of link rot. One thing that stuck out to me is that 38% of the web from 2013 is gone today. This is one good reason I use Linkwarden for important links which saves a cached copy and asks Archive.org to save a copy for me. Then I add it to my notes in Obsidian with links to the original and a copy saved for later perusal.
While I think that AI scraping is bad scraping sites for Archive.org is good as it helps preserve the web.
Should You Make a Deal with AI?
This was a good article on news companies courting AI companies to make deals. Remember when Facebook said we should pivot to video? When getting on the Apple News app would be so good for publishers? Neither of those things panned out as beneficial to websites like the tech companies said, and AI won’t be any different.
We should be saying no to AI companies that want to reduce our content to a single answer in a textbox which will not bring any new readers to our sites.
Ursula K Le Guin on Becoming a Writer
Her advice is just write. Forget the rules, or use them if they work for you. The only way to start writing fiction is to start writing and do it over and over, badly, until you get something good.
