While some people have standard names for their devices and others have complex mystical naming schemes I’m a pragmatic person when it comes to names. My current laptop is a Framework 13″ which had the swappable mainboard upgraded a few months back which makes this computer 2024-08-12-fedora-framework because that’s the day I installed the operating system on the computer.

I write the names inside my running shoes the same way. <yyyy>-<mm>-<dd>-brand-model because at times I have 2 pairs of road shoes that I swap back and forth and 2 pairs of trail shoes. I track distance for my bikes and shoes via Strava so I know when to retire them.

Pretty much anything that needs to be tracked with some name gets the same treatment in my house.
