Today we have a hard conversation about the rights of people, how play was lost, and local music.
Trans Rights, Women’s Rights, Gay Rights…Oh my
This was a very interesting episode of Uncomfortable Conversations looking at trans rights vs women’s right with Professor Robert Wintemute who wrote Transgender Rights vs Women’s Rights.
When Did I Stop Letting Myself Play?
Remember how much fun it was as a kid to jump in a puddle when it was raining? Or just randomly rolling down a hill because it’s there? It’s about just doing something because it seems fun in the moment as an act of natural resilience. – Are we having fun yet
The lack of play is due to the west focusing on Protestant Work Ethic and it’s love affair with the self made person. The focus on productivity at all costs and seriousness yields the fruit of guilt when you enjoy a hobby because you should be monetizing it. We’re encourage to delay our fun until a future moment when we can retire1, fun is for children and for that mythical day when you can retire.
Fun isn’t for serious adults, until you decide it is and just start having fun without caring what those around you think.
Chill Until
This week I came across a local musician who put out his first album called Chill Until. A great collection of lofi hiphop beats and I got to purchase the CD directly from the artist. Just the type of music I’m looking for sometimes during long coding sessions.
In my teens I was heavily involved in my local music scene around Oshawa Ontario, and as far away as I could afford the gas to travel for. The biggest early band I got to see was Thousand Foot Crutch and I have a home printed edition of their first album That’s What People Do. I purchased that directly from Trevor after getting to meet the band in some random concern around Peterborough Ontario.
I love music and spend most of my day enjoying it while I work. The best purchase of my last year was getting a stereo again. I do stream music sometimes when I’m looking for something new, but most of the time I listen to the music I own on disc over my stereo.
