Chris wrote about resetting his music library and sticking with the music that he's into now, not just stuff he's nostalgic for.
Since I got a proper stereo 2 years ago I've continued to bring new bands into my life and the best way I've found is to dip into YouTube music or random YouTube music videos and then when I hear a band I like I try a few albums and purchase what I really like.
I never threw away my old CD's so with the albums I purchase monthly and all my old music I have just over 900 albums in my locally hosted music collection. It ranges from Steve Vai, to Britney Spears, to Spiritbox, to Falling in Reverse, to Sleep Token, Michael Jackson, Adele, and many others.
To host this I have a Synology. I started with Roon because it was very easy but now I use Navidrome. I play the music on my computers with Feishen and use Nautiline on my iPhone.
One of the great features of Feishen is the panel than shows me random albums from my collection. A few times a week I see an album I haven't listened to in a while and I realize I miss it.
I've done the opposite of Chris. I pretty much only listen to music I own. I continue to expand my selection of music to listen to every month by purchasing more music I like. I revisit the old stuff sometimes, and continue to enjoy the new stuff too.
A few of my more recently discovered favourite bands.
- Electric Callboy: Their music videos are especially hillarious
- Twenty One Pilots: The Story set of music videos is especially excellent
- Sleep Token: Haunting vocals
- Gunship: 80s music videos are excellent
- Baby Metal: k-pop metal anyone
