Building an Audience is Hard on Mastodon

I've heard from a couple people that building an audience today is exceptionally hard on Mastodon - Boost more cool shit

But is the point to build an audience? Maybe we should move past everything being about the number of followers and "building a business". Is the building an audience angle just the wrong way to look at Mastodon and social media in general?
