In a Twitter DM conversation Brian Krogsgard accused me of not plugging myself enough. He’s probably right, as much as I know about WordPress and running a business I simply get more joy from plugging others.
More than that, I’m probably a bit shy about throwing myself a big party for any little thing I do.
Relationships
If you’re married one of the best ways to keep a healthy marriage is to water the grass on this side of the fence. The only reason it looks greener elsewhere is that you’re not watering your grass.
The best way I’ve found to build long term fans is to make sure you water the grass you share with them. If you spend a bunch of time focussed on making sure others know about the awesome things they do, you will see some benefits.
They will want to start watering the grass that’s a bit more on your side. Then it’s not you telling everyone how awesome you are, it’s a fan that you put time in to.
Maybe I should say a bit more about me, maybe I would sell more copies of my WordPress book.
But I’m not sure that I’d enjoy it as much as I do helping others.

talk is cheap and the internet is so full of cheap talk.
great work speaks for itself. i don’t care about those that think “OH, BUT YOU NEED TO MARKET MORE!” – that’s such an old-world philosophy it makes me ill. Even “internet marketers” don’t get this.
I think you’re doing it right. It may be a slower rise but it’s a much better one in the long run. keep on doing what you’re doing.
Thanks, these comments of encouragement certainly help me keep going.
oh, and can you add twitter share links (at the very least) so i can share your stuff? i’m lazy. seriously. lazy.
Maybe. So often they just end up as big fat 0 items showing how little people shared.
I’ll at least try it again.
