This is the prequel to both A Day of Fallen Night and Priory of the Orange Tree and while the story is good, I’d say it’s only worth reading if you’ve read both the other books and want to dig more into the history of the world that the author has built.
Here we follow the fall of Yscalin mostly through the eyes of Marosa as dragons awaken and start burning the kingdom. At the end we’re left with little hope, so knowing where the other two stories take the world gives you far more meat in the story.
Overall, it’s well written, but not the starting point I’d recommend for the world.
