Sixth of Dusk has been left behind by a society that no longer needs his trapping skills. Even though this is a product of his own doing and he agrees with the move, he ambles through life wondering what his purpose is. Starlight is a dragon trapped in her human form because she refused to stop caring about people and subject herself to the whims of her people.
Together these two recognize their worth, and help save a planet from a wider cosmological war that has started to come to Dusk's home planet. Dusk travels the Emberdark, deals with monsters out of his own history, and successfully finds the third path his world can take so they don't become subjects.
Starlight learns that even mostly immortal dragons don't know everything and they need to lean on the intelligence of others. It's not always going to be okay, which is okay in itself.
Like every Sanderson story I've read, this was great. I even teared up a bit at the end.
