> If I’m your audience, and I’ve spent a thousand bocks on my movie library, I don’t want to have to throw away that investment. I want to be able to use one family of devices and one program to manage my movies. [^1]

I stopped purchasing video content or music from Apple a few years back because they didn’t really want me to be able to watch it. They want me to spend money on that content, and then never provide the entertainment service I have already paid for. Here’s how that works.

First, purchase a movie from Apple. Watch it…we’re all good so far.

Years later, some other random payment to Apple doesn’t go through. Maybe it’s some game or iCloud storage…doesn’t matter. Now go try to watch that movie you already paid for…Apple says no.

Apple won’t let you watch a video you’ve previously paid for because some other unrelated payment hasn’t gone through.

I use a VISA debit which means I have to transfer funds into the account that is tied to the card. At least once a month a payment defaults and I have to deal with it. Often this is okay, but sometimes it happens right as the kids are trying to watch some movie we’ve purchased…and then I have to stop everything I’m doing to fix the “issue” Apple has with me.

In essence, they hold prior purchases hostage if a current purchase doesn’t go through.

My solution, only purchase physical media that I can send over to my Plex and then no one can tell me when/how I’m allowed to watch my media.

I’m not sure where you sit, but I’m tired of giant companies policing the stuff I’ve purchased. I’m still working my way out of a bunch of this police state, but it’s hard because there are so many areas and things that I love which may leave me locked in. Access to past purchases shouldn’t be limited because of some issue with a current purchase.

Monday I shared my [Things 3 Content Calendar Automation](https://curtismchale.ca/2020/11/02/automating-my-content-calendar-in-things-3). This lets me take a Draft and then turn it directly into a Things 3 project and a calendar item so that I can track where I’m at with my content production.

Today you can see a few [thoughts that came out of my third reading of Deep Work](https://curtismchale.ca/2020/11/06/3-thoughts-from-deep-work-by-cal-newport). Not so much on the Deep Work side of things, more on the social impacts of issues.
