Probably the worst thing about productivity porn is that it makes you feel so good. Shuffling your notes around makes you feel like you're doing something worthwhile, and you're not.

It's insidious and continues to penetrate every area of your life. Have 15 minutes, well I'm sure someone has 32 tips to help you use that 15 minutes for "productive" pursuits. It would be a terrible waste of time to simply sit on the couch for those minutes and relax. There are emails you could be checking, or you should probably read a book, or if you have kids there is certainly some detritus lingering around your house that should be picked up.

But all this productivity makes you so productive you never live. You may even see success from this productivity. You may have all your needs covered and be able to purchase anything that society tricks us into thinking we need.

But will you have time to enjoy your life?

We even idolize these stories of overwork. I'm sure many people read about Danielle Steel working 22 hour days all the time and think of all the money she has as a successful author and make her their frame of reference for how hard they need to push.

But this is survivorship bias in action. We don't see the many thousands of writers that worked just as hard and didn't have the particular combination of skills that Steel has. They weren't in the right place at the right time to get noticed by the right person to jump start their career.

They worked every evening late into the night. They didn't hang out with their friends, and eventually had few people they really knew. They didn't see any success, they just worked so hard they never lived.

Yes I'd love to make a living with my words and videos, but I'm not willing to give up mid-day bike rides, lazy nights on the deck with my wife, afternoon naps in the sun, and so many other things in order to get it.

I'll be productive, but I'll also live.
