You Know Who You Like

When you’re starting out you may not have a voice but you know who you like. Often we start by copying those we look up to, and the disappointment in our work comes when we can’t copy close enough so we see a gap in our work compared to our idols. As you copy a bunch of different heroes your voice emerges.

WTF Notebooks

A WTF Notebook is there for when you join a team or are doing something new and start wondering why on earth there are issues. Every time you wonder WTF is going on, write it down and then sit on it. Sit on it so you can prioritize items instead of defaulting to the most recent problem you saw. Sit on it so you can bring up issues with possible solutions and get a reputation as someone that’s trying to solve problems instead of someone that’s complaining all the time.

Giant Book Preview Lists are bad

The writers of these lists don’t have to have read the books so their opinion on it is weak at best. A more insidious part of the list though is about the authors and feeling left out if you don’t get on the list. I remember getting on lists of “notable” people in the WordPress space and feeling validated, I also remember when I stopped showing up on lists and starting to feel like I was a failure. If you’re an author, don’t put much weight in the lists.

If you’re looking for book recommendations, find someone who reads the books and has an opinion that resonates with what you like and take their recommendations. Maybe you’ll like my book ratings
