We're swift to recognize when other people need to think again. We question the judgement of experts whenever we seek out a second opinion on a medical diagnosis. Unfortunately, when it comes to our knowledge and opinions, we often favor feeling right over being right. In everyday life, we make diagnoses of our own, ranging from whom we hire to when we marry. We need to develop the habit of forming our own second opinions. - Think Again Pg 18

The version of this I grew up with comes from The New Testament in Matthew where Jesus is speaking to a crowd and tells them:

3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. - Matthew 7:3 NIV

The big thing I've pondered this week is where do I need to rethink? Where am I preferring feeling right instead of taking the time to do the personal growth and actually be right1? I'm a middle-aged white CIS white dude, if anyone has a tendency to prefer their power and feeling right, it's people like me, which means it should be most incumbent upon me to spend time rethinking my assumptions and beliefs.
