Back in the beginning of August I wrote a bit about Microsoft doing the right thing by having do not track on by default. Well recently an advertiser spoke up about it again saying that the industry would ignore IE and do not track.
“The industry will not honor that flag,” he says. “I’m not saying I will ignore that flag. I’m saying the industry will ignore it.”
Can’t say I’m surprised at all. I never really expected the advertising industry to do the right thing and not track users. It’s simply not in their best interests to do it. I doubt we will see any advertiser stop tracking users without some government intervention.
I still 100% think that Microsoft is doing the right thing having DNT on by default. I just wish that it was actually going to mean something for users. But I guess that’s asking way to much of an industry that thrives on getting as much information on you as possible.
