This is a story of one of the biggest telecom companies in Canada, Rogers Communications, and the family behind it. While the subtitle leads you to believe that we’re going to hear about the sordid drama between family members during a merger with Shaw Communications and a CEO ousting, that’s a very small part of the book. Posadzki spends much more time talking about Ted Rogers and how he founded the company.
My verdict, Ted’s son Edward wants to run a fiefdom of people that agree with him. He did push his other family members out of positions of power to get this, while trying to maintain his innocence by saying he was acting in the companies best interests.
I’m also annoyed again at a company that can see an 8% jump in revenue with a 35% jump in profits after a massive outage that took down lots of infrastructure in Canada. I suppose we’re expected to live with these types of companies being the norm though as most of the big companies in Canada have similar stories, single digit increases in revenue and double digit increases in profits while Canadians struggle to get by.
If you’re interested in some telecom drama in Canada, this was a good read.
