Eric Barker is going to be the new guru that saves us from all the other gurus that purport to know how to achieve success, by turning to science to tell us what matters in our quest for success.

Yes it matters more if your boss likes you than if you are good at your job. This seems obvious as we see a wealth of likeable men being in charge of far more competent women. Now the continued assumption is that asshats that suck up will stick around, but Barker says that we shouldn’t keep them around because their drain on the company is so huge that it doesn’t matter how big a performer they may be.

Barker is also early to the party of moderation in work. He says that we need to decide for ourselves when we’ve done “enough” for the day and then go rest so that we can come back tomorrow ready to work again.
