Elantris by Brandon Sanderson cover

This is the oldest book in Brandon Sanderson’s writing that I’ve read, being published first in 2005. As such I found a few parts of the writing clearly still in development. Unlike other more current books, I was easily able to guess where the author was going early in the book. This didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the story, it just shows how far Sanderson has come in the decades of writing he’s done since publishing Elantris.

Elantris is a city that was once glowing white and full of magic. This book follows the fall of a Prince, and how he helps everyone around him with his unshakable optimism in the face of any tragedy. I very much enjoyed the magic system and the politics added to the story without weighing it down. While this isn’t my favourite book from Sanderson, it’s still a great read.
