The author's main idea is that burnout comes from a mismatch between our ideals and what work can provide. Society tells us that we should find fulfilment in our work, that work for works sake is a high ideal, but for many work doesn't come close to meeting our needs. We find no meaning in much of what we do, and feel like we're failing society because we don't find that fulfilment.

Malesic hints that we need to find fulfilment outside of work, or at least break out of the cultural expectation that work will solve our problems.

My biggest issue with the book is that he spends lots of time diagnosing the problem, but only hints at any solutions. There is no grand plan for readers to get involved with. We're left with a diagnosis and no clear path towards a resolution.
