Tyranny of Merit book cover

In The Tyranny of Merit, Michael J. Sandel takes a hard look at the oft-touted meritocracy. Does it work? Is it a valid way to “get ahead”?

No it doesn’t really work, unless you’re already winning financially and have something to fall back on so that you get many attempts to show your merit. The myth of meritocracy also lends itself to the west’s faulty myth of the self-made person, as it discounts all the resources that society as a whole contributed to making you the person you are, from roads to education we all contributed to your opportunity to have success.
