Welcome to the PKM weekly newsletter. My goal is to round up good resources in the PKM space so you don’t have to.

If you get value out of this newsletter consider supporting it by becoming a member. You can either get my weekly thoughts or all my courses and my weekly thoughts. You could also purchase a course if that fits your needs better.

You can get this in your inbox by signing up.

Bigger Ideas

Platform agnostic ideas that may help your PKM process. They may feature a software, but I think they apply to more than a single platform.

How to do numbering in an antinet.

Jeffery did a live stream of taking notes.

Use of the daily note may help your memory as you age.

Maybe Obsidian is not needed and DEVONThink can do everything for your note needs.

Here is an extensive list of public digital gardens.

You may think writing or teaching is your life’s work, but it’s probably your notes or maybe they’re just a tool?

What people get wrong with spaced repetition.

Maybe taking notes “just in case” is stupid and getting in the way of your thinking time.

Someone is searching for the “perfect” notes app. Of course, there is no such thing as a perfect note app.

Using a personal website to enhance your ability to think.

If you find literature notes to be a pain, check out the comments on this thread.

A creator’s Second Brain workflow.

DEVONthink vs Notebooks vs …. Ultimately it sounds like the OP has issues with sync and is simply frustrated with DEVONthink. Unfortunately on DEVONthink sync, all I can say is I use CloudKit and it works for me and always has.

Is it possible that Zettelkasten is not a note-taking system?

Something Interesting

Because we’re all lookin to expand our minds a bit.

This is an interesting paper about the human factors of knowledge work. It’s had me thinking about the way that most of the examples we see cited in books (like Building a Second Brain) are of physical systems for taking notes and arranging things. Maybe this whole digital thing is a dead end and we haven’t realized it yet?

Software

How to generate a markdown formatted link out of the new Apple Mail (still in beta) on macOS with AppleScript.

How to open documents in external applications from DEVONthink To Go.

DEVONthink To Go 3.5.2 fixes some crashes for those of us on iPadOS 16 beta as well as adds support for .vcard and .vcf files. Check out the full release notes at the link above.

DEVONthink for macOS also released an update with 3.8.5. This brings us ways to create links in other documents with great ease, as well as better metadata detection in markdown documents.

Predictably people are upset about a price increase in Noteplan. What always gets me about these discussions is that pretty much every one of them would throw away $120 a year in coffee (or some other similar item) but balk at software that can help them get stuff done and keep track of their work. I don’t use Noteplan but it is a solid application that is worth the price of $120/year without a doubt.

logseq

What are namespaces in logseq and how do you use them?

Here are some different ways you can structure data.

Ramses has an ongoing learning log for July’s learning sprint in the community.

This quick capture plugin looks interesting.

Here is part 5 of 8 for an introduction to logseq course.

This is a longer interview/demonstration of how Josh is using logseq and dendron.

If you’re looking to manage tasks, this may be the video you’re looking for.

Craft

Craft adds awesome task support. This does look like an improvement over the workflow I looked at a while back.

There is now a Craft Bible. So now you can find all the information you need on Craft in one spot.

How Craft is used in a YouTube planning and recording setup.

Does anyone know of a TickTick integration for Craft?

Craft Weekly 4 is out.

Craft as a todo system.

Obsidian

Day Planner has stopped working and doesn’t seem to be getting development effort. Maybe you could fork it and take it over?

Obsidian Roundup is out for the week. The biggest news is that the Templater plugin is looking for help or a new maintainer because it’s too big for a single person to manage.

Auto linking specific words as you type? Looks like Various Compliments can do this based on the comments in this thread.

Curating a newsletter with Obsidian.

Yup I use affiliate links sometimes to support the newsletter. If it’s on Amazon, it’s an affiliate link for sure.
